Client Brief
It is often difficult for young tourists visiting the Blue Mountains to locate the cultural landmarks to visit. We were asked by the client, Mountains Made, to create a map that would highlight the vibrant arts and culture scene in the Blue Mountains.
Concept Development
As the creative lead of this deliverable, I completed an analysis of maps used by a younger demographic. The map needed to be interesting enough that tourists would want to peruse an analogue version instead of reaching for their phones.
I found that 'USE-IT maps' were used across Europe by young tourists visiting the area. I used these maps for precedent research and analysed the categories included in the map.
Additionally, a survey of current maps demonstrated a trend towards maps drawn in a 'sketched style'. I presented this style to the client, and it resonated with them.
Other Designers
This brief required me to work with two designers to bring the map to life. Whilst I led the creative direction of this brief and completed the layout of the map, the following two designers were invaluable:
Stephanie Sov: Grey sketched elements on the primary map.
Christian Dunne: Illustration of the heat map.
Visual Outcome
The map was designed with a contemporary feel, which appealed to a younger tourist demographic between the ages of 18 and 25.

Analogue map created for the Blue Mountains region, highlighting cultural landmarks.
